Open Source Initiatives

Systems Planning has several open-source initiatives underway. These fall into two categories: providing our own programs as open source, and using open-source products to build our products.

Providing Open Source

We have two initiatives in this area:

• Our MWeb Flash project provides an open-source Flash frontend to an MWeb Enterprise Database (available to MWeb Enterprise clients only). The code is written in Flex. More information

• Our MARCView and MARConvert products have been made open-source. The C++ source code is available under the Apache 2.0 license and can be downloaded from our site.

Using Open Source

As time goes on, we are using more and more open-source products to develop MWeb.

• All versions of MWeb are written using open-source languages, tools, and libraries.
• The MWeb Preprocessor uses the free open-source database system SQLite for its working storage.
• The MWeb Enterprise Database can be built in the free open-source MySQL database system.
• We are considering developing a version of MWeb Universal to run on Linux servers.
