Welcome! You may safely subscribe to MWeb News on our website systemsplanning.com. We will not share, sell, rent, or lose your contact information. Price ReductionsWe have lowered prices by thousands of dollars on MWeb Enterprise and the MWeb XML Server. For MWeb Enterprise, we no longer charge the first-year support fee. This is now included in the start-up cost. This is a savings of $1,000 to $8,000, depending on the size of your collection. The $6,000 start-up fee has been dropped for the optional MWeb XML Server (MXS), which supports access to your MWeb Enterprise or PastPerfect-Online database by other programs. Examples of MXS use at LACMA include:
MWeb Flash NewsThe MWeb Flash prototype is substantially complete. The prototype is to demonstrate ideas for a Flash interface to an MWeb database. The source code for MWeb Flash is free to MWeb Enterprise sites, for you to build on. This lets you concentrate on the interface and leave the database access and XML to us. You may try the prototype here. We are grateful to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for hosting the prototype. More information may be found here. |
MWeb Universal 2.0 ReleasedAfter three years work, we are happy to announce MWeb Univeral 2.0, which provides Web-based federated searching of multiple databases of different types, on multiple Windows servers anywhere. Databases are searched on their existing servers -- ideal for consortia because it avoids having to send files to a common point. Since the databases are searched in their native form, there is no need to export them or send them to a central site. Databases may include any collections management system, content management system, library system, database systems like Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL, and library MARC21 records in their native format. Search features include keyword and phrase searching, boolean, truncation, and the ability to restrict searches to specific databases, records, and fields. Each site may customize the searches, displays, and interface. MWeb Universal has been tested with these systems: SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, Access, Foxpro, PastPerfect-Online, MARC21 bibliographic files, MARC21 authority files, and MWeb Enterprise Databases. We have tested with 50 databases at once. For more information, a demonstration site, and a slideshow, please see the MWeb Universal homepage. PastPerfect Web Share NewsThere are now over 170 sites using PastPerfect-Online, powered by MWeb, with hosting on the PastPerfect servers. This is the easiest way to an online catalog for PastPerfect sites. However, sites that must host the database on their own servers now have an option from PastPerfect called PastPerfect Web Share. This is a version of MWeb Universal, and will be sold and supported by PastPerfect's world-class support team. The online catalog will run on any Windows server. For features of PastPerfect Web Share, see the MWeb Universal homepage. Server requirements are here. For pricing and support, please go to PastPerfect Software, Inc.. Announcing CAPSWe have begun a new project at Systems Planning, a way to make presentations from MWeb Favorites and other images. The project is called CAPS -- Capture/Author/Playback System. It will have a Flash interface, and also will produce Flash presentations, so that presentations will be able to have sound, video, and special effects. CAPS will include templates for typical kinds of presentations, such as side-by-side comparisions of two images, timelines, slideshows, and MWeb Online Exhibits. This will save you from having to design presentations from scratch. For a screenshot of the current state of CAPS and further information, please see the CAPS homepage.
