Welcome to MWeb News! You may subscribe on our website systemsplanning.com. We will not share, sell, rent, or lose your contact information. MWeb Enterprise NewsWe have added a new feature recently: the ability to display a map or floorplan with objects shown in their geographic locations. Please see the demo (suggested search words are bowl or vase). In addition, MWeb Enterprise sites may have the new features recently added to PastPerfect-Online (see adjacent article). Future features we are working on include being able to host your MWeb site in the cloud so you don't need a server, and increasing the use of drag-and-drop to simplify the interface. The MWeb site at the Fowler Museum at UCLA is now available. Please try it! MWeb Flash Prototype Now AvailableDid you know that your MWeb Enterprise Database can be used by other programs? We are developing a prototype Flash interface to MWeb Enterprise Databases to demonstrate the possibilities. We will provide the source code free of charge, for you to build on. This lets you concentrate on the interface and leave the database access and XML to us. You may try the prototype at collectionsonline.lacma.org /mweb/mwebflex.htm. We are grateful to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for hosting the prototype. Adobe Flash is a way to present users with interactive multimedia experiences beyond what can be done with an HTML interface such as MWeb Enterprise. Flash is excellent for displaying animations, movies, sound, and visual effects, and these can be used with the data in an MWeb Enterprise Database by using the MWeb XML Server (priced separately). MWeb Flash is written in Flex, a free programming language from Adobe. It is easy to use and has superb documentation. For more information, please see systemsplanning.com/ mweb/features.asp#flash. |
PastPerfect-Online UpgradedSystems Planning and PastPerfect Software, Inc., have just released upgrades to PastPerfect-Online, powered by MWeb. The upgrade provides these new options:
Please contact PastPerfect to order, or for more information. There are now 150 sites using PastPerfect-Online! MWeb Universal 1.2 ReleasedIn addition to its previous features, MWeb Universal now provides web-based federated searching of multiple MARC21 files in their native format -- no need to convert or export. Any number of MARC files can be searched at once. All MARC files must be either bibliographic or authority, and encoded in either MARC-8 or UTF-8. (A later release will provide the ability to mix formats and encodings. UNIMARC and MARCXML will also be supported in a later release.) Search features include keyword and phrase searching, boolean, truncation, and the ability to restrict searches to specific fields. In addition, searches can be restricted to subsets of the files, such as juvenilia, reference, records with specific fields, etc. Images will show in MWeb search results and full records if they have URLs in the 856$u. Each site may customize the searches, displays, and interface. Low price with no annual fee. Free support is included. For a list of enhancements in this Release, please see http://systemsplanning.com/ mweb/ buyuni.asp#upgrades For more information, see the MWeb Universal homepage at systemsplanning.com/mweb/universal.asp, which includes server requirements and ordering information. MWeb Universal 2.0 Beta ProgramMWeb Univeral 2.0 will provide web-based federated searching of multiple databases of different types, on multiple Windows servers anywhere. Databases are searched on their existing servers -- ideal for consortia because it avoids having to send files to a common point. So far, it has been tested with these systems: SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, Access, Foxpro, PastPerfect-Online, MARC21 bibliographic files, MARC21 authority files, and MWeb Enterprise Databases. We are now looking for sites to test this release. Your input would be highly valued! Please see the Beta Program page for more information.
