Examples of Subsets and Search Categories

Contents

Subsets

This diagram shows how Subsets pick selected records from the Database. In this example there are three Subsets: Local history, Fine arts, and Artifacts. (The white records are in no Subset.) By specifying a Subset in a search, only the appropriate records will be retrieved.

Points to note about Subsets:

  • Subsets are mutually exclusive; a record may belong to one and only one Subset.
  • Records need not belong to any Subset. Searches where no Subset is specified will examine ALL records.
  • A MARC Database consists of one or more files of MARC records. Therefore a Subset can retrieve from multiple files. If the Subset "Local history" is defined as records containing a 690 field, then searches specifying that Subset will draw from all records with 690s in all files in the MARC Database.

Search Categories

Search Categories slice the data a different way: by looking at only certain fields in the records. This example shows how author, title, and subject fields can be defined as Search Categories. Thus a searcher can specify that the search terms be matched only in author fields, for example.

Searching

These images show how Subsets and Search Categories appear in MWeb's search displays.

Subsets appear in both Keyword Search and Advanced Search, where they are listed as Content to be searched. Search Categories appear only in Advanced Search, where they provide the titles for the data-entry boxes.

In the Advanced Search display you can see that Subsets and Search Categories can take effect in the same search, if the search so specifies.
