MARCView™
Used in 54 Countries around the World
OPEN-SOURCE NOW AVAILABLE
Updated June 18, 2009.
You may now download the source code and documentation for MARCView and MARConvert, free to the community under the Apache 2.0 license.
We are working with an organization who wishes to sponsor the source code; this organization will be able to provide mechanisms such as a repository and listservs. We regret that we cannot provide these, but in the meantime, we offer the code and documentation.
Please see the documentation for the tools required to work with the code.
Please email any questions about the code and documentation to info@systemsplanning.com. We will do our best to help you.
Background:
After 16 years, we have decided to stop developing MARCView and MARConvert in order to focus on other projects.
You may continue to order MARCView from our ecommerce site. Of course it will keep working forever, so this change will not reduce its value. Please see the Order Page for prices and links.
We are no longer taking orders for MARConvert.
We will continue to honor our support policies:
-
For MARCView support is a non-issue -- it is so reliable that we have had only three support requests in 16 years. Even so, we will support the current release (3.12) for at least two years after your purchase. (Support for earlier releases has expired.)
-
If you have a MARCView site license, the download file is no longer on our website but on our fulfillment service. Please email if you need to re-download.
-
For MARConvert, support will be provided for five years after the initial delivery.
-
All support is free.
We thank all our clients for their business and suggestions over the years. Sixteen years is a long run!
We will continue to provide ways to search and view MARC files through our MWeb Universal product.
|
MWeb Universal 2.0 supports federated searching of MARC21 records in bibliographic and authority formats and MARC-8 and UTF-8 encodings -- all at once. No need to convert or export; the files are searched in their native format.
|
|
In addition, you can search other kinds of databases at the same time as the MARC files. The MARC files and databases can be on multiple Windows servers anywhere. Databases are searched on their existing servers -- ideal for consortia because it avoids having to send files to a common point.
|
|
MWeb Universal is a web application, so searches can be performed anywhere there is an Internet connection.
|
|
Please see the MWeb Universal home page for more information.

Current release: 3.12.2 (September 19, 2008)
Bug fixes
1. Searching fields 010-099 with a subfield code returned "found but cannot highlight" if the subfield did not exist.
2. Hexview data was cut off for some fonts.
If you have purchased version 3.12, and have either of these problems, email us for a free upgrade.
MARCView is the easiest way to view, search, and print ANSI/ISO standard MARC records, UNIMARC records, and MARCXML records. It will also handle many files that are not strictly MARC. (It cannot be used to edit MARC records.)
"I want to thank you sincerely for this tool. The hex view has been a godsend, the pricing and licensing structure is refreshingly reasonable, the program is easy to load and to use. Thanks very much for MARCView!"
"I don't know how anyone operates without MARCView!!!"
Unsolicited comments from MARCView users |
There is no limit to the number of records in a file (the largest file we know has been used with MARCView is 1.6 million records). The file size is limited to 2 gigabytes (2,147,483,647 bytes).
Handles records up to the MARC limit of 99,999 bytes and fields up to the MARC limit of 9,999 bytes.
MARCView does not modify your files in any way.

-
By clicking a button, you can view and print the original MARC record in hexadecimal and text view (works for all formats: MARC21, MARCXML, UNIMARC).
-
Color coded to make it easier to read. If you double-click on a MARC21 or UNIMARC directory entry, the corresponding field is highlighted too; double-clicking on a field highlights the directory entry too.
-
By changing the width of the Hexview window, you can cause the record to wrap according to your needs.
-
MARCXML records are displayed in color-coded XML format.
